As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Christine Suess specializes in eye and vision care, so it was no surprise that she saw a way to improve care in Cornwall, Ontario. With a lack of resources in her own community, she often had to refer patients to other hospitals within Ontario, creating a burden on them and their families, as well as the healthcare system. For the benefit of her patients and her community, Dr. Suess wanted to diminish wait times and offer more comprehensive local care. To achieve this goal, she invested her own money into equipment that transformed her ophthalmology practice into an eye care centre with the ability to provide emergency care. It took Dr. Suess to make real-world change that ultimately helped care for and save local patients’ sight.Read more
Dr. Nadira Khan believes in and embraces the power of technology, but when it comes to mental health care, she champions the human touch. In an age in which this area was undervalued, she saw a pressing need for more community and social workers to offer hands-on support. To that end, her traditional family practice makes progressive choices, moving from a fee-for-service model to a capitation one, in which a set per-patient fee allows for efficiency and cost-control. It took a doctor to ensure patients receive the humane, human care they need.Read more
Dr. Shafai began working in hospitals in 1998. And, as patients came and went, she recognized a gap in care, asking herself, “what happens to complex patients after discharge?” Further investigation found that they received limited support, leading to a burden on themselves and their loved ones. She set out to change that. Working with paramedics and family health teams, she ensured they received the right training, information, and help they needed to follow-up with complex patients in their homes, in turn reporting back to an in-hospital clinic. It took a doctor to empower community workers so complex patients received the treatment they neededRead more
Look around a hospital emergency room at almost any time of day and, inevitably, you will spot at least one child…waiting. Durham Region paediatrician, Dr. Karen Mandel, noticed this, too. In fact, she saw far too many kids waiting due to an almost chronic level of underservicing. And she decided to do something about it. In May 2017, she launched a pediatric clinic, helping hundreds of regional kids and their families get the care they need faster. It took her passion to get kids out of waiting rooms and back on the road to wellness.Read more
In Kapuskasing – a town of about 10,000 people – doctors were in high-demand and low supply, which led to diminished patient care and overworked physicians. That’s where Dr. Yves Raymond stepped in. Rather than take a one-on-one approach, he helped to create a Family Health Team that worked with the local hospital and a variety of community care providers, ensuring patients saw the right practitioner at the right time. Ultimately, this meant better, more targeted care for unique patient needs. It took a group approach to change a community.Read more
