Today’s Reading List: How to get the most out of your relationship with your doctor

Communications is key, when it comes to getting the most out of a relationship with your doctor.

Dr. Lynn Wilson from the University of Toronto wrote an article in today’s Toronto Star that offered tips to keep your relationship with your doctor as healthy as possible.

First, choose your family doctor with care, and then stick with him or her so that you can get the benefit of a physician who knows your health well.

Second, speak up, no matter how shy or nervous you may feel during an appointment. Voice the nagging question in the back of your mind, and say if you’re uncomfortable with a treatment.

Third, let the receptionist know when you need more time. Doctors have their own ways to accommodate longer appointments.

As with most things in life, clear communication about what you want and what you’re thinking will go a long way toward a good, caring relationship with your family doctor. So next time you find yourself visiting your family doctor, follow the tips offered by Dr. Wilson to get the exceptional care you need and deserve.
